Thanks to those who have responded about this author. I was heartened
to learn that you feel your experiences with him were positive ones. We
have decided to "risk it" and bring him to our K-6 school in early Nov.
If turns out to be a positive experience, I will let you know. I am
unfamiliar with his work myself and am anxious to receive the kit that
his publishers are supposed to be sending to me right away. We are
going to invite parents to attend our program with him, in hopes that it
might boost sales a bit.

The only negative comment I received was from the person who reviewed
his books for SLJ. She was less than enthusiastic, which does make me a
little bit nervous. Somehow I deleted that e-mail and can't post it
here for you all to see. I should like to thank her in this forum for
writing to me directly. I had already seen that review myself when I
went to Follett's TITLEWAVE and checked on Sargent's books. It made me
a little nervous, but I trust you librarians to know what works with
children. We are looking forward to our first author visit in a few
years.

Now, here are the responses that I received:

He is VERY entertaining and personable. He has been here twice.

We have had both Dave jr. and his parents in the past. Our kids have
really enjoyed them. Most of their books deal with character
education
and we have most of their different book series in our libraries.
They
are checked out so much I had to order replacements this year.

We had David visit our school. The kids loved seeing his dogs
and he did a great job encouraging reading and writing. We purchased
his books and they have been a favorite because the kids actually met
the author. The thing that most impressed me was his rapport with the
kids. It's worth the effort.

Dave Jr. came to my school a few years ago and brought his dogs. He
was
very good and the kids enjoyed him. He was not as dynamic a speaker
as
his dad but well worth the effort. And, you can't beat the cost. I
sent home the flyer a week or so ahead and so he had pretty good
sales.
