I am in the process of drafting our media center goals and objectives for this
year, with the help of the media committee. One thing is certain - Our library is
sorely underutilized by students and teachers. New books are not even enough of a
draw for our inner city kids. In light of this, goals and objectives are obvious:

1) to provide more instructional support to teachers and staff in the form of
increased classroom collaboration between teacher and LMS.
2) to provide a bridge between media resources and student preparation for
graduation and end of course tests
3) to encourage and promote increased awareness of the media center

One idea I have would take care of number one and number two objective:
Student-led standardized test workshops to be held in the media center. Students
often "hear" a message better if it comes from one of their peers. Knowing that one
of their classmates is leading a workshop would definitely get them in the media
center, and it would help in their preparation for the tests.

I am needing the help of colleagues on this board in coming up with additional
activities that address any one of these objectives, specifically number 3.
I would be interested in knowing :
1) what kind of "hook" you provide to teen-agers (in the form of programs and/or
activities) to get them in there in the first place.
2) what you do to maintain their interest once they are in the media center.

I am interested in ideas that address the student body as a whole OR even just a
certain department in the school
Keeping in mind the population of Booker T. Washington High School kids coming from
inner-city homes, I would be particularly interested in hearing from media
specialists who serve this population.

One last thing, I am more interested in activities / media programs that are
student led - I have learned that purchasing expensive reading incentive programs
like Accelerated Reader or Reading counts is not of interest to our high schoolers.
Unless it is endorsed by their peers or friends, such a program is just going to go
untouched (at least at my school , anyway)

Thanks a lot!
