My reply earlier in the vein of "save a tree or forest or two"

I kept mine for one year; this was in 92-93. I kept all the cards in
3-4 boxes in a back cupboard and I am still using them as they are such
a perfect size and weight for extra note cards for students, for
P-slips, for small temporary signs and so on. I will be sad when I
finally run out in the year 2006 probably. I hate to see this go to land
fill - they are great in their second incarnation. Kids get a kick out of
looking on the back side and remembering some book from their past

The furniture itself also can have a second life as storage for many
small things - check the archives. This issue has been discussed
before.

Subject: Re: Target: Shelf List / Automation

I still have cards in my card catalog (turned catalog around a year ago
to use as a display area as the cards are almost 4 years out of date
and teachers, NOT STUDENTS, still wanted to consult it even though I
had a sign on it reminding all that it had officially "closed" in
Dec2000) and have (and still buy cards for) the card shelflist as our
home made catalog is still not great for inventory purposes (but is on
the internet, which is so wonderful...)

I need to toss the cards and plan to do it this summer. I should have
done so sooner but our internet problems often made returning to the
card catalog better than nothing! We are two towers down on a wireless
system which was often victim to the weather and are 23 miles from the
main tower. The installation of new equipment last spring should make
our internet outages almost a memory so it is time to toss the cards.
The folks who take the furniture out of my library to clean will
appreciate same! When you are sure that your new system is stable, it
is time to toss the cards.
