I am, but generally as an "emergency" measure. I put the word in quotes
because often the reason they could not find enough actual substitutes is
that there was poor planning. They know the approximate size of their
substitute pool, and should know about how many of them will be available on
any given day, but still they will schedule "important" classes for a huge
group of teachers, for example, all the fourth grades in the district. Duh.

Now, I have scheduled classes, up to six a day, for which I must have lesson
plans, and for which I have (it's my own, but it's still serious) a
curriculum. Okay, just drop this class, and play teacher somewhere else. No
respect for my plans, of course. I know they are in a bind, and I do it
smilingly (it's really a grimace, but it's close enough to pass), but I am
really insulted.

It would be nice if they'd make up their minds. Either what I do with the
classes I get is important, or it's not.

By the way, if I am out, they get a sub for me, given that one is available.

I must mention two things: I have a full-time aide, who is very competent
and easily handles the exchange of books, and the classes come with their
homeroom teacher, so at least that works when I am out of the library. Too
many of these teachers, who seem to view the library class as an extra free
time for them (it isn't supposed to be) are put out by having to keep an eye
on their kids, so if for no other reason, I am missed when I am not there.
