I used to have a very difficult 3-4th grade class. I HATE it when a
class drives me to get angry, and after a few episodes I instituted a
new activity: when that class came in we had a "silent library" day. No
one, including myself and the teacher, was allowed to speak out loud -
communication happened via notes and sign language. It was intended to
be a sort of punishment, but they loved it and frequently asked to do
it again. It ended up being an occasional thing, maybe once a month,
over the course of two years (this was a multiage 3-4 class). We even
played silent Library Bingo, the challenge being that if anyone spoke
there would be no prizes handed out. The behavior on the "talking" days
improved somewhat but more importantly I had a means to quiet the class
instead of getting angry - if they were too raucous we immediately
moved into silent mode. I used it with a couple of other classes but
mostly with this one troublesome class. It would be fun with 7th
graders - dare them to do it successfully and have some kind of a
carrot for pulling it off.

Good luck-
