Just curious... How many of the librarians monitoring the LM_NET list are also private school librarians? (I know we have a few because I see the signature lines.....) If there are private school librarians monitoring, do you also know of the NAIS listserv? (National Association of Independent Schools). There is a private school librarians' listserv that provides "us" with information dealing with things like standards and resources directly relating to the private school libraries. In fact, this summer the ALA's Independent School Librarians group issued a pamphlet for students and parents regarding ways to evaluate their private school libraries that is very informative AND could be helpful in upgrading the resources and support staff that are in private school libraries. If you are interested in becoming involved in the NAIS listserv, you can join at: http://www.nais.org/resources/listserves/ If your school is a member of NAIS or the regional independent school accreditation programs, you can gain access through your school also. To become involved with the ALA's Independent School Section, you will need to be a member of the American Association of School Librarians AND subscribe to the list at: http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslproftools/aasledisclist/iss.htm I hope more of you can become involved in this very important area of school librarianship! It is important that our voices be heard and that our library standards be raised to meet those in public schools---and it is important that the results of our accreditation relating to libraries be available for others within our private school families (other private school libraries) to see, so that we can determine if what we offer meets the "basic requirements" found in some of the most outstanding schools in America. (At this time, we cannot compare our libraries with others because there are "no standards" that can be compared---for more information on this issue, see the article <Independent Schools: Desperately Seeking Data--What are the Standards? by Dorcas Hand in Knowledge Quest (May / June 2004), p. 48-49.> If you are a member of NAIS and ISS lists, please let me know so that I can connect with others who share some of the same issues relating to private school libraries!
