Hi, all, I’m on vacation in Florida where it has been low 80’s and sunny the whole week. We people from the North need that badly! It’s given me some time to attend to some important details like my ALA/AASL/YALSA ballot due by 4/22. It is VERY important that all eligible AASL and YALSA voters cast ballots! Our return rate was sadly low in the last election. AASL and ALA Executive Board member Terri Kirk has written a terrific motivational article for Knowledge Quest that is listed with the current KQWeb issue at the address below and is featured as a link from the front page of the AASL web page: <http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslpubsandjournals/kqweb/kqarchives/v33/333Kirk.htm> I’m using the online ballot and have logged on a few times but still haven’t “finished.” We’re allowed to vote for 36 ALA Councilors-at-Large and I’m not there yet. I hate to waste a vote--and that’s where you all can help. Below are people I’ve currently chosen and their categories for me. Then there is a list of people I don’t know. If you know any of them and want to recommend a vote, please reply to this post. If you know any of the people I’ve listed as potential votes and think I should NOT vote for them, please reply privately. The lists are not in priority order, they scrambled like the ballots are. (BTW, from the ALA Elections FAQ’s, if you were a paid member on 1/31 and haven't received a requested ballot by April 1, call ALA Membership and Customer Service at 800-545-2433, press 5 or send email to membership@ala.org. They will confirm voting eligibility and send a replacement ballot, if necessary). School people I know: Eugene Hainer Barbara K. Stripling Drucilla (Drucie Raines) Gullion Erlene Bishop Killeen Ann Carlson Weeks Dee Gwaltney David Loertscher Sylvia Norton Dennis J. Leloup Toni Negro Clara L. Sitter Eva Efron Children or school librarians, some of whom I know: Nick Buron Lisa Von Drasek Kathy East Randall Enos Vivian R. Wynn CD McLean Margaret L. Kirkpatrick Melanie Huggins Toni Bernardi Kathy Lehman Mary Berry People who are New Yorkers or were notable ALA Councilors when I was on Council Barbara A. Genco Jan Sanders Tom Hennen Robert Hubsher M.A. (Peg) Oettinger Peter McDonald Julie A. Cummins Monika Antonelli Khafre K. Abif Mary Biblo Mary Long Michael J. Miller Mable W. Robertson Ling Hwey Jeng People I don’t know (who may be good people. Know them?): Alison C. Morin Mary Mcinroy Diane M. Fay Marcellus Turner Kathleen E. Bethel Tom Hennen Samuel E. Trosow Carolyn Lowe Garnes Rory Litwin Jane Sessa Feili Tu Karen Danczak Lyons Rosanne Cordell Susan Scheiberg Stephen Crowley Carol Ritzen Kem Shelby Harken Wei Jeng-Chu Sherrie Schmidt Pamela C. Roalkvam Lorraine Smith Bonnie Kunzel Barbara Webb Patricia Gail Oyler Nancy Pack Audra Caplan YALSA: the only person I know personally who is running for a YALSA committee is Terry Young, who compiled School Libraries Work for Scholastic, among other accomplishments 2007 Margaret A. Edwards Award Committee Young, Terry AASL President is tough; Bonnie Grimble and her nominations committee named two people that I know well and greatly respect, Gail Dickinson and Cyndi Phillips. ALA president is also hard because I don’t know either candidate but did hear them speak to the AASL Affiliate Assembly and AASL Board and, on the basis of their statements to both groups, I have to agree with AASL Pres.-Elect J Linda William’s endorsement of Leslie Berger (used with permission): Dear Friends: I urge you to vote for Leslie Burger for president of ALA. When both candidates spoke to the AASL executive board and the AASL affiliate assembly at the midwinter conference, it was clear by their responses that Leslie understood the needs of the library media specialists community. She has served in a variety of library settings--state library, regional library system, public library, consultant for all types of libraries--and excelled in all of them. Currently the director of the Princeton (NJ) public library, Leslie is committed to diversity in staffing and in the people the library serves, innovative library service, and creative solutions. Leslie is deeply committed to improving salaries of library workers and currently serves on the ALA-allied Professional Association Salaries Committee. She made a substantial contribution to the successful ALA-APA video, “Working@yourlibrary--for love or money." As president of the New Jersey Library Association she initiated a salary survey that has served as a prototype for salary surveys everywhere. I firmly believe that Leslie will continue and build upon the progressive leadership that the ALA presidency has brought to the association in recent years. Leslie's ability to listen, complemented by her sense of humor, intelligence and high level of energy, enables her to connect with ideas and people and find a smart, inclusive solution. I urge you to vote for Leslie for ALA president so that ALA and its members can have visionary leadership at a critical moment for the future of libraries. And Iwould appreciate your passing this message on to your staff and sharing it with friends and colleagues. For more information about Leslie Burger for president, see <http://lb.princetonlibrary.org/> You will find Leslie’s platform at <http://lb.princetonlibrary.org/platform.htm> J.
