WOW.. I can relate. I serve 475 with no library aide -- although I do not
have to maintain the computer lab attached to the library. I found it
necessary to actually schedule time for myself during the day --- and
nothing can interfere with my time. It means my social life is almost
non-existent - but that is my choice.

For years I have made it a practice not to view any films/TV shows which are
violent in nature...this helps to calm my mind...this means, of course, I
save money by not going to movies --- and that is OK with me as well. I
haven't been to a movie theatre in over a year. I found that I need to
remember that I am important and I can not preach wellness if I am not well.

I also have simplified my life - gave away many possessions and live quite
peacefully. I do at least one hour of contemplative prayer daily and another
time for deep meditation. This is the only way I can find to relieve
stress - it is also combined with a daily walk I gave up having TV or the
radio on for background noise - and enjoy driving in this manner as well. I
did this about 10 yrs ago.

It means I have to get up at 4 AM daily to accomplish all of this plus my
reading for ALA committee work (PPYA), my reviewing for Catholic Library
World and my reading for my Community. I am usually in bed by 8.30 PM.

I also decided to be more assertive this year. This is my first year in 42
yrs as a librarian in which I do not have at least one aide. I have learned
to say 'no' to demands, activities, and anything that isn't a priority. And
yes, some things do not get done. I am about 2 months behind in overdues My
attitude is 'so be it.'
