When checking these, I would also check for stereotyping in text and illustrations. As for older books with information that hasn't changed much, I learned a good lesson when I revamped my 900's. Most of my 900's were old copyright dates and some obviously had to go, but you know history--it doesn't seem to change as much as other sections. However, when I weeded heavily and reordered, that became one of my most popular sections. Students were drawn to the shelves just from the attractive appearance of the spines on the shelves--as were the librarians who were at my campus yesterday for a meeting. I don't know about you, but my eyes lead me around the bookstore too! Food for thought. Remember those are folktales, fairy tales, etc. that have a very long shelf life. For those, look at circulation statistics, general appearance, and importance. I also have some older books in the 300's on how the government works that hasn't changed much in the past 20+ years. Check the illustrations to see how dated the books are. Also that's where some older books on one-room schools and the Pony Express are and they're still fine. As far as timing, I say "make a clean sweep of it." Definitely get rid of the junk. Empty shelves can be a good way to show your need for more funding.
