Below are the winners announced earlier today here at the Georgia Children's Literature Conference. I have also included some notes of interest in case you weren't able to attend but might be interested. STANLEY'S PARTY by Linda Bailey (Picture Book Awad winner for K-4 grades) LOSER by Jerry Spinelli (Book Award winner for 4-8 grades) NOTES: The husband-wife team of Dennis & Judy Fradin began the day at the first general session. They were very comical and fed off of each other's humor. I was more familiar with their state books from the "Sea to Shining Sea" series, but some of their recent works and how they got the idea for them was interesting. From my notes..Judy started by helping her husband do research for his books. She even took many of the picture books. Dennis wrote a book about Crawford Long (believe he said it was entitled WE HAVE CONQUERED PAIN) and had been to Georgia before to research this book. He said unfortunately this title has been out of print for quite some time. A more recent book he and his wife have worked on is one one IDA B. WELLS (led a crusade to stop lynchings and was featured as a famous person in he TENNESSEE book from the STSS series mentioned above. Another book on the the civil rights line is THE POWER OF ONE..a book about Daisy Bates. Both seem very good and their passion in getting these stories out was evident. They are working on a book about the Trail of Tears and according to Judy, it is going to be 10 pages long. I asked her if this was for the elementary age and a picture book...and she said she believed so. They are not the ones doing the pictures for this book. She was not sure of a publication date...they are still doing research on the topic. I did ask her if she had heard of Major Ridge (she had) who lived in my hometown (Rome) in NW Georgia where the Chieftains Museum is...and happens to have been the house of Major Ridge. Nikki Grimes, poet and author DANITRA BROWN LEAVES TOWN recited some of her poetry and told a little about her family. She has a website at www.nikkigrimes.com Today's highlight included an excellent presentation by author/artist Robert Sabuda. Part of his program was on the history of pop-up books and concluded with how he creates his pop-up books. His pop-up book AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL has een on the NY Times best seller list for weeks. He has a new pop-up book on dinosaurs coming out August 2005 and he is currently working on a project with Maurice Sendak. The book by Maurice is called IT'S ALIVE and it was my understanding that he (Robert Sabuda) is helping with the pop-up aspects. It was interesting to find out that all pop-up books are porduced by hand in either South America or Asia! The process seems to be elaborate, but due to the efficiency of the workers they can create many copies in much less time than we would think. I thought that the cost of the books was a bit high....but after seeing the hard work that goes into just constructing the book by hand...it's a wonder they don't cost closer to $100! Someone asked Mr. Sabuda how many books he had in his pesonal pop-up collection. He responded that he had about 40-50 "old ones" and 500 total. The earliest ones were called "movables" and go as far back as the year 1536. Best wishes!
