Good people,

I hope you all will permit me to grab a cup of hot chocolate and join you in
the coffee shop for a bit. (Actually, I've been here for awhile, just
sipping silently... I'm only just now brave enough to speak up!)

I'm interested in starting an adult/child book club at my elementary school.
I've never run one, nor have I seen one run, but I think it has great
promise! I've read "The Mother-Daughter Book Club" and I've prowled some
websites this summer, but these are generally geared toward parents starting
a club. I've had trouble finding much about running one through a school.
I searched the archives and found tantalizing, passing reference to such
clubs, so now I'm after details!

My hope is to open it up to grades 3 - 6, since those are the ages when
parents start fading out of the reading scene and kids start drifting, too.

My questions, for those who are wiser than I:

1) Do you have any how-to's (or how-definitely-not-to's) to pass along?

2) What books would you recommend? I've been on the hunt for books that are
both engaging and good discussion fodder, and I know they're out there, but
they just aren't springing to mind for me. I'm trying to avoid anything too
"heavy" or too difficult to get into, but ones that touch on interesting
issues. (For example, "Al Capone Does My Shirts" is a great opener for
talking about rules, is it ever OK to break them, peer pressure, etc... and
I feel it's appealing to parents and kids of both genders.)

I'd be grateful for any insights and of course I will post a hit. Please
respond to my personal e-mail, rather than my school e-mail, as I still have
(blissfully) 2 weeks before school starts up! :-)
