During our first meeting of the school year, my principal surprised me by suddenly pulling out a sheet of statistics about our district library programs. He praised how well our faculty collaborated last year to utilize the library, favorably compared our checkout stats with many other similar sized schools, and noted how up-to-date our collection was despite budget cuts and because of my extra efforts. While my assistant is being cut to half-time, he insisted that the successful library program was a key factor in our students' academic achievements last year and that my time was needed in the library program, not hooking up computers and fixing printer problems. Later on when the teachers moaned because the laminator was broken, I volunteered that in my spare time I'd had the older broken laminator repaired last spring just in case we ever needed it. Teachers broke out in cheers and promised chocolates. Later the director for our inter-generational tutoring program with senior citizens dropped by to tell me that 100% of the students in the program I coordinate achieved over a full grade level of growth. I have decided that this was a dream day and I don't want to wake up. I don't think any other day could be so shockingly wonderful, so I may just have to quit and not go to school again. I have actually poked myself several times just in case I was dreaming. I know that I have a wonderful principal. To be publicly acknowledged like this was amazing. I think that's one principal down, only 95,000 more to go. I'm sending out wishes that everyone experiences this day soon because you all work hard and deserve it. Diane R.
