As the new school year quickly approaches, I would love to draw once again on the
collective wisdom and experience of this list.

This will be my first year as a high school librarian. There are unusual
circumstances at the school which I will not go into, but though the school serves
about 2200 students, there is no clerk or aide for the library, and the previous
librarian struggled to get time each day for a lunch and conference period.

I am working on the last issue very positively, but the clerk issue is no go at
this point. I will have a student helper every afternoon, and I am getting support
in working to have the library covered during my lunch and conference. (My mantra
right now is "positive thoughts, positive thoughts, keep on topic of the issues and
work it out!")

I have spent the last two weeks cleaning the library, putting up art work, making
it an inviting place to be, and generally trying to get things in order before the
onslaught begins. I have spent my own funds on this, but this is something I did
as a teacher, and don't mind that at all. I really want to start the library off
on a good note.

I would like to send an introductory letter to the teachers that is positive and
engaging and also allows me to ask their support on basic points: remaining with
their classes, not sending subs with classes (unless prior arrangements are made),
etc. Effective and positive wording can make all the difference, and if anyone has
a letter they can share, I would be very grateful, and will post a hit if
requested. I did check the archives, but didn't find what I was looking for.
