LM_NET Archive

It's interesting you bring this up Floyd. We've just accepted an article
for Knowledge Quest #3 (Jan/Feb 06) issue in which the school librarian
discusses this question. She compares the large aggregator services in
relation to her curricular needs, their overlaps and unique content, and
draws some interesting conclusions about access to "free" information, as
well as scholarly journal archives online and Questia. (We're developing a
comparative matrix online as well.)

Subject: [LM_NET] Why databases instead of the Web?

At the risk of being simplistic or argumentative, why do school library
media centers need to continue subscribing to general databases for
student research? Databases with specialized information continue to
have a niche, but could it not be argued for the run of the mill
research paper, students can and do find quality information without
sifting through five different databases?
