Recently I ran a very successful reading promotion based on a series that is popular here, Deltora Quest by Emily Rodda. Teams of three, as in the story, signed on and had to complete a series of challenges based on each book. Each successful challenge was rewarded with a 'gem' of the appropriate colour, all of which were stuck on to a belt, with the quest being complete when the belt was, again, as in the story. The quest attracted both boys and girls mostly in the 10-12 age bracket. What would be a series that is popular and readily available in the US that a similar interactive activity could be based on? In fact, it doesn't need to be a series - I also had success with Graeme Base's "The Eleventh Hour". The keys are that whatever is developed requires the students to read and re-read to really engage with the text; that the problem to solve demands higher-order thinking and that it needs more than one session to complete. I am writing an article for Teacher Librarian and want to include this strategy but I need to "Americanise" it by suggesting titles appropriate to the US and Canada particularly.
