Many years ago an experienced librarian gave me this idea: Have activities to do when book check out is completed. So, I have a tub of laminated puzzles, word search etc. from which they can choose. (I get many from tearing up the old Highlights magazine.) I use overhead markers that can be wiped off to use in working the puzzles. If the child is a very slow learner, I allow them to work in pairs. I also have "tickets" which enable them to use the listening center (tapes from storytellers, Shel Silverstein). For smaller children I have "tickets" that say "Read with a friend, use flannelboard, read from big book." The tickets limit how many are at an activity and work as crowd control.
