Dear LM_Netters,
I'm automating a small school library using a database program
(Athenaeum, which is made from Filemaker Pro). I can assign any barcode
numbers I like--I'm not limited to any particular symbology, such as
Code 39 Mod 10, which I had in a previous job using Follett. I have
configured the scanner to read any numbers, and it works quite well.
(The kids were testing it last week, and it read the numbers from a coke
can, an ISBN, and a barcode label I had printed.) The system will also
print the barcodes on standard labels, which I have tested with the
scanner, so I don't have to contend with explaining my system to a vendor.
My question is this: do you have any advice on numbering before I make
this permanent? At the moment I have assigned 4 digit numbers to the
books and 3 digit numbers to the patrons, but that can easily be
changed. Is there a good reason to use higher numbers? Should I
restrict which numbers the scanner can read? The collection has about
3000 items, by my estimate, if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I always say, LM_NET is
the best!
