Dearest Netters, I teach at an alternative high school (very alternative--a therapeutic boarding school) and we are seeking accreditation from the Montana OPI. We met with OPI yesterday at their visit, and something came up in the library discussion that I found rather odd. They wanted to know if we taught "library skills" classes to our students (Dewey Decimal System and search strategies were both mentioned in conversation) at the high school level. We don't, and they seemed taken aback that we didn't do this. However, in my experience (which is, granted, limited), MOST high schools don't teach "library skills" classes. My question to you is, do you teach "library skills" classes on a regular basis? I'm not talking about library orientations or collaborative/support work with classroom teachers on research projects, but a regular, for-credit class? Please let me know any classes you teach and the nature of them (grade level, subject matter: library skills, tech, research, etc.). I'm just trying to do some personal research to see if I'm way out in left field here, because that comment really threw me for a loop. If you are from Montana, in particular, I would really like to hear what you have to say, but I'm just looking at data in general as well. I will post a hit if there is interest. Thanks for taking the time to clear this up for me. I feel very confused.
