I am not sure where this thread began, I'm a bit behind on my email.
However, I attended an outstanding session on audiobooks at AASL in
Pittsburgh. The session was titled "Using Audiobooks to Build Student
Success". The handouts are available from the presentation at

http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/conferencesandevents/national/attendees/handoutsa/handouts.htm.

The session was on Sat. Oct. 8 during the 8:30am concurrent session.
Sylvia Vardell, a professor at Texas Women's Univ. presentation focused on
the research in reference to listening. Listening to audiobooks is very
different from reading a book and they develop and improve separate
skills. Listening to a narration can help a reader to hear correct
pronunciation. My son used to listen to the Redwall books on tape and
they were narrated by Brian Jacques. It required a lot of my son's
attention listening to his British accent. I know many of those books he
listened to he would not have read but the tapes exposed him to different
genres.
