Re: "Myths are a stories that usually but not always involve deities, gods
or demigods. . . . I've noticed that stories involving the worlds major
religions ( such as christian, muslim, hindu, buddhist, etc) are usually
cataloged in dewey's 200s. Those associated with the belief systems of less
known cultures (hawaiian, native american, african, australian aborigines,
etc) are often placed in 398 and considered folktales."

I just read my contribution to Shelly's hit regarding the differences
between fairy tales, myths and legends and am appalled. This is another
example of why we should always read our messages at least twice before
hitting the send key. I am sorry if I offended anyone. In no way did I
mean to imply that only the religion oriented stories connected with the
"major" world religions belong in Dewey's 200s, and that all the others
should be classed as folklore.

Let me try to remove my foot from my mouth and restate this. What I meant
to say is that I have noticed that in many school and public library
collections, stories associated with belief systems that are not as wide
spread as those generally considered to be "major" world religions are
often catalogued in 398 which is where we put fairy tales etc. I'm not
saying that this is the correct classification.

I hope I got it right this time. Again my abject apologies to anyone I
inadvertently offended.
