Jeff, you gave me the first genuine laugh of the day! I think you could expand
that into a publishable article.

I have a HUGE TV in my elementary library. Every day for the first two months of
school, kids came in for library time expecting a video. It DOES get used on days
when I'm not there, but I can't take responsiblity for that! Interestingly
enough, it is only the PK-3 that seem to fall into that trap.

Librarians can go on the offensive: We opted to not check out books over the break
(I got outvoted) SO I packed up boxes of Christmas books and took them to each
classroom so they would have something to read this week if they had a need to fill
a few spare minutes. I thought the first grade teacher was going to kiss me.
Another thought would be a traveling storytime...visit each class for a special
story hour, complete with snack. OR plan a special time in the library INSTEAD of
video time. AND I'm in the process of discarding a large assortment of old videos.
If it doesn't have educational merit, I won't keep it!

We are not limited to being the copyright curmedgeons of our schools! We can use
creativity to provide more entertaining options.
