Attached is a form that teachers must fill out 3 days prior to showing a video...even if it is a school owned educational video for Science or Social Studies. The form has to carry the signature of all teachers who plan to view the video and the principal must approve of it. The video must be documented in lesson plans. That said...yes, we have some teachers who do not abide by the policy and if the principal is aware of that, then she handles it with the teacher. I cannot show anything closed circuit unless I have the form with the principal's signature. We do subscribe to the video licensing (about $400 a year for 1600 students)which allows us to show movies for rewards, entertainment, etc (this covers our after school program too which uses movies for entertainment purposes, however we don't hold them to the policy of filling out a form.) Julie Stephens, Media Specialist, NBCT Calhoun Primary/Elementary stephensj@calhounschools.org -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of Mrs. Laurita Sent: Thursday, December 22, 2005 10:44 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Videos and Copyright I too sent out an email two weeks ago reminding teachers and aides that all videos have to be involved with direct instruction. I have had some success. One teacher who had been our biggest violator now plans pre-viewing and post-viewing activities for all videos and they are all directly related to the curriculum. At the beginning of this school year our principal asked the teachers for a list of videos they planned to show and why. These also have to be reflected in the lesson plans. When he walks the halls if he sees a video that he knows wasn't on the list or in the lesson plans he'll go in and ask, "What are we teaching today?" (He has the personality that allows this to come off as nice, not nasty.) It has cut down dramatically on the use of videos. Each year the principal and I discuss a license for videos. My concern is that the teachers will take this as permission to show more videos rather than being in compliance with the law. Bene e Pace (Blessings and Peace), Paula S.W.
