Deborah said "I just wish we could get over the idea that the week before the break isn't really class time and that the library will provide something for kids to do." Is it really US (or the classroom teachers) thinking this week isn't really class time? I have to say that the children this week have been absolutely OFF THE WALL...I usually do a holiday-themed book and a wordsearch/coloring this week...but even that I have found is difficult to keep the kids contained. That said, I showed the Polar Express some today. Last year I read the book to the entire school during their library time in December...this year some are watching the DVD and noting the differences. It's not ideal, but I can't see much getting through to my kids in the state they are in this week! Just my two cents, Emily Emily Smith, Librarian JH West Elementary, NY ESmith@plainedgeschools.org ________________________________ From: School Library Media & Network Communications on behalf of Deborah Stafford Sent: Wed 12/21/2005 2:58 PM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Re: [LM_NET] I admit it: I'm breaking federal law today. How 'bout YOU? Well, since you asked.... I have refused to be a part of this kind of copyright violation. I cannot prevent the teachers from doing it in their classroom but I do not facilitate it. I don't have in my collection any "entertainment" videos. My budget simply doesn't stretch to provide videos that are not directly tied to the curriculum. If teachers want to go down and pay to rent their own, I cannot stop them. But we also have no way to show videos to the entire school. The principal approached me about some videos to show around the school, he was going to go down to the video place and rent them. When I pointed out the copyright issue, he did drop the idea. I did get a stream of kids sent down to ask for a good video since they were not having class, but I was unable to accommodate them, all I have a "educational" titles. We have in the past, as a whole school, gone down to the local movie theatre where we paid to have a showing of a movie, but we usually do this the week of our standardized test. We pay for the movie, either by having students pay, or by student activty fund paying. I just wish we could get over the idea that the week before the break isn't really class time and that the library will provide something for kids to do. Deborah J. Stafford Gen. H.H.
