I always thought that part of the criteria for a Caldecott is the illustrations need to help tell the story. I think about "Officier Buckle and Gloria" and how the story is changed without the illustrations. Even "Make Way for Ducklings" loses a great deal of its charm without the expressions on the ducks' faces. Am I correct in this being part of the criteria? That takes the emphasis off the artistic media and puts the stress on how the pictures move the story along whether black and white or vivid color. -- Pam Gelbmann, Media Specialist Wilson/Johnsville Elem.
