I am not on the Caldecott committee and don't know anyone who is. I also question
Henke's book as the best of the year. Is it possible that a Henkes fan or two on
that committee felth that it was time for him to be honored for his body of work?
It would appear so.

Judy Freedman explained the process of selecting the Newbery a few years ago when
Crispen and the Cross of Lead won. There is no poll of librarians around the
country involved. Rather it is the choice of a group who get copies of and read
every eligible fiction or in the case of the Caldecott, every picture book
published that year.

This is not the first year in my almost 35 years in the profession that I've said,
"Huh?" to a award winner.
