I don't know if this discussion has been going on for a while--life's been hectic lately and I haven't been following too closely. But I wanted to mention that this is by no means a contemporary issue. Twenty-two years ago I was a first-year teacher in a small private school, with a school board that visited our classrooms regularly. I was teaching cursive to my second-graders, and we would always stand up and "write" huge letters in the air. Two school board members were visiting my class when I taught "f." As we all stood up to write lower-case cursive "f", I reminded my class that the lower part of the letter went forward and that sometimes people forgot and made it go backward. After class, one of the school board members confessed--to the principal--that he had been writing that letter wrong all his life, and that old dogs really could learn new tricks!
