A progression of my question from last week ... I want to make a bulletin board displaying principles for students to use in selecting books. I've experimented with various guidelines (blue dots for easy books, requiring at least one chapter book, etc.) and will continue to do so, but the longer I do this, the more I realize that I'd be serving students better if I also taught them to make good book choices. To this end, I'd like to post 7 - 10 general book selection principles on a bulletin board. This would mainly be for grades 1-4 but could also be helpful for 5-8. A few that come to mind ... *Will it be too hard, too easy, or just right? *Have I read it over and over and over again? *Can I finish reading it by the due date? *Does it respect my family's values? (I'm not sure quite how to say this one. Basically, I want to be clear that I expect students to respect their parents' preferences on, for example, the Harry Potter controversy. However, it could backfire on me to clearly "advertise" that some of our families would disapprove of some of our books. Is there a better way to say this, or should I just not touch that one?) Any other suggestions? I'll post a hit ... thanks!
