I am starting an after school book club for my 5-6th graders. I went to a workshop last month at my state educational media conference, which was helpful, but I still have some questions. I talked about the club today with the students, had interested students take permission slips - about 20 out of 80 took them. I plan to meet once a week for 30 minutes (that's all the time allowed) I was thinking of having the students do some reading at the club, some at home - don't want to overwhelm them. I was thinking of Love that Dog by Sharon Creech, as the first book. I thought we could discuss it as we read it, like a literacy circle. Questions: 1. Does this sound ok to anyone who has done something like this? Am I missing anything? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Wendy S.
