We did not have Mikaelsen at our school, but the other middle school in our
district had him for an author's visit. I got a little sneak preview of his
presentation. If I'm not mistaken, I think his fee was around $2000 and expenses
of course were covered.
(We had Jerry Spinelli; his fee is $3500.)
He does have a bear that he has raised as a cub.
Now... he's huge. The bear has his own little "home" outside; Ben doesn't accept
speaking engagements unless his bear is hybernating. He talks about his
relationship with his bear, and it's captivating.... I wish I could remember the
bear's name.
His message to kids is wonderful. Acceptance and Diversity as well as Ending
Bullying are at the top of the ticket! You can tell that Ben doesn't just walk the
walk, but he really lives his own message.
Also... he did know a real Petey! He shares pictures of Petey as well.
Ben's speaking price is really in line with other recognized authors...... he is
worth every penny.

Just in case there are any of you who do not know, Ben Mikaelsen DOES
have a bear that he raised from a cub (as I recall). I had the pleasure
of listening to him a couple years ago at our state LMS conference. He
shows slides of his bear at home. He would be great for an author visit
at MS, but I bet he is really pricy. Make your day great. And thanks to
Frederick Muller for previewing and publishing your recommendations on
so many books for us.

he can keep the cub and the state outlaws spring hunting of
bears. The night he runs away a huge storm hits the
mountains. The story hits the wires and the national media
shows up. This starts a survival, adventure that only
Mikaelsen can write. The reader follows the rescue team of
the police, Josh's disfunctional family, and Josh's survival
with his bear cub. This 265 page book is a GREAT survival
adventure story.
