[LM_NET] Middle School Book Suggestions??

I am new to this list so please bear with me if this
is not the type of query usually found here!
I am a media specialist in a grades 6-8 middle school.
 I have received a small amount of grant money to
pursue a couple of projects with my students.  One
component of each of the projects will be student
discussion based on having read an identical title.  I
am looking for assistance with finding suitable,
thought-provoking material.  The book(s) must appeal
to males and females, grades levels 6-8 as I stated
before.  I'd like it to be relatively short as this
will be an extracurricular activity for the students
and they will already have assigned reading material.
In the past, Stuck in Neutral by Trueman and Kissing
Doorknobs by Hesser have been featured in a similar
program.
Since funding is minimal, the title(s) should be
available in paperback format.  I should probably also
mention that I work in a conservative area.
Now, with all of those guidelines/restrictions, could
anyone come up with some suggestions???
