But by waiting until you get some requests for fiction books about
Buddhists, Muslims, or Jews, it implies that you currently don't have a
balanced collection. Not all students request books on subjects that
they are interested in. Many would rather turn to the public library
than ask. Also, even though students may not request a certain book does
not mean that they won't be interested in it or read it if they are
exposed to it. All students should have access to books(fiction as well
as non-fiction) incorporating various perspectives(religious, political,
etc.) so that they can learn about opposing viewpoints as well as make
decisions for themselves about their own beliefs...

No issues here.  If librarians were getting requests from Buddhist or
Islamic students to get a popular fiction series based on their
religion, we'd probably go out of our way *to* get them.   As long as
the collection is balanced, I don't see it as a problem.
