You might check with the encyclopedia publishers for a "win-win" situation....some
vendors offer the print AND the online versions as a package deal. For example,
when I purchased the online version of World Book encyclopedia last year for my
library, we received the print version at half-price. I'm not sure that every
vendor is doing this, but you can always ask.

As far as the type of encyclopedia for high school, I've used Britannica and World
Book, although I have also had additional copies of other such as Compton's and New
Book of Knowledge. I would definitely investigate some of the professional
resources to determine what is being offered as "the best" reference source---or
those of us on LM_NET can share what we've learned, of course. I think the final
decision depends upon how your students are using these encyclopedias, what level
of work they do, and how often the books will be used---you don't want to spend
$2500 on a set of encyclopedias that are used once by one class during the year for
simple research on animals.

Just some ideas.

Subject: [LM_NET] Encyclopedias?

Please help me with a decision.!
As we are basically a new high school, we do not have a set of print encyclopedias.
Our principal believes that students should rely on electronic sources; however,
an English teacher is adamant that a high school should have at least one complete
print set. My questions to you are:
  1. How much do the students in your high school actually use the encyclopedias?
  2. Which one do you recommend for high school students?
  3. Do you think it is worth the price?
  3. Where do I go to purchase them?
Thank you so much for your help.
