We have had a Protected Literature List in the past (I've been here 12 years now.) The list had 6-12 titles per grade, for grades 3-6 only in elementary. and yes - I understand there had been conflicts - especially between 6th grade and 7th&8th. And that at one time "someone" suggested the libraries should "pull" all protected titles so that none of the students could not read them until they were presented in class! HA! A 5th grade teacher who just returned to our district this year after being gone a couple of years, asked me for the list recently, and since I couldn't find it in my files, I contacted our district elementary Language Arts coordinator, and was told it was being "revised". Leah Hawkins, Librarian West Hurst Elementary Hurst, TX leahleah@comcast.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "McMurray, Joyce" <jmcmurray@FORTOSAGE.NET> To: <LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU> Sent: Wednesday, January 12, 2005 10:47 AM Subject: [LM_NET] TAR: Protected Book Lists I would like to get an LM-NET dialogue going about "Protected Book Lists". Does your district have a protected list for each grade level? If so, how many books are on the list for each grade level, how were the books selected, and have you had conflicts or disagreements regarding items on the selected lists for your district? The media specialists in our district have been invited to participate in the district dialogue regarding our own protected lists. We are noticing some real conflicts especially when some grade levels select books that are recent award winners, etc. Apparently, if a book is on the district "Protected List" it can't be read aloud to a class prior to that grade level or even used for small group reading circles. What is your professional thinking about Protected Lists in general? Do you have research related to use of Protected Book Lists? What about reading levels or lexiles of books on PBLs? Do you have statements about what a PBL should and should not be? Any other concerns we need to be aware of? We would also love to take a look at other districts PBLs. If you could send us online links to yours that would be a great help as well. Please help us with your ideas. Thanks so much. I will be glad to compile a response to post on LM-NET if anyone else needs this information.
