See if this helps. Not exactly a job description, but rather what the duties would be if we were miracle workers. Media Specialist In this document, the term "Media Center" incorporates both the library and computer lab. They are physically and philosophically integrated into one learning environment. Administrative 1. Recognizes the critical role of information literacy within the overall curriculum. * Develops short- and long-range goals for the Media program. * Encourages the use of new technology and information resources by all. * Facilitates access to resources beyond the Media Center. * Models ethical and responsible use of information by observing all copyright guidelines. * Keeps principal, staff and parents informed of Media Center program goals, objectives and needs. * Assists the school administration in interpreting the school program and its objectives to the community. 2. Maintains a welcoming physical environment that allows for intellectual growth and effective use of the resources. * Plans and arranges Media Center facilities for maximum use. * Encourages use of the Media Center by all, especially in terms of helping all curricular areas fulfill Graduation Standards' requirements. * Maintains flexibility in scheduling. Mediates any scheduling conflicts. * Provides a relaxed yet business-like atmosphere in the Media Center which is conducive to serious student use of the facility and which encourages students to seek whatever assistance they may need. * Supervises the arrangement of displays and exhibits likely to interest Media Center users. * Oversees all aspects of the daily operation of the Media Center program. * Handles concerns of others in a positive and professional manner in order to protect the users' rights to privacy and confidentiality. 3. Maintains the Media Center budget. * Keeps an accurate record of all purchases. * Assumes responsibility for getting all purchase orders to District Procurement and following up on any back-orders or delivery delays. * Uses varied selection tools while preparing the Media Center budget. * Elicits input from staff AND students regarding purchases, subscriptions. * Makes sure that all purchases correlate with the curriculum or are used for students' recreational activities. 4. Manages Media Center resources. * Maintains accurate computer catalog and records. * Organizes materials for maximum accessibility. * Maintains the online system for circulation of materials. * Completes annual inventory and reports on the collection status to administration. * Does original cataloging of new materials following OCLC standards using MARC format. * Oversees proper processing of new materials. * Weeds obsolete and worn materials from the collection. * Trains and supervises all Media Center staff and volunteers in the performance of their duties. * Arranges for interlibrary loans of materials for both staff and students. * Coordinates the services of the school and public library. * Maintains accurate records of the Media Center's holdings and use and generates statistics as needed. 5. Promotes the use of the Media Center. * Develops an aesthetically pleasing environment. * Prepares collections of media for classroom use. * Promotes use of the Media Center by preparing bibliographies. * Organizes media so it is readily accessible. * Bookmarks appropriate Web sites so students have a starting point for research projects. * Exercises a leadership role and serves as a catalyst in ensuring the Media Center is central to the instructional program of the school. * Defines explicitly the limits of expected behavior. * Enforces established behavior and discipline policies in a consistent manner. * Works to develop within each student a sense of self-discipline. 6. Promotes literacy and the enjoyment of reading, viewing, listening, and computer usage. * Develops activities that promote reading, computer literacy. * Provides appropriate reading and computer guidance to students. * Demonstrates knowledge of literature and programs appropriate for students. * Collaborates with teachers regarding students' leisure reading and online materials. Learning and Teaching 1. Teaches library and computer information skills and promotes information literacy. * Provides orientation programs. * Provides formal instruction in the use of the Media Center as part of planned curricular assignments. * Provides individual instruction on the use of the Media Center. * Provides personalized training to staff and students on beginning and advanced Web searching strategies. * Promotes the use of the professional collection by soliciting suggestions for purchase and by giving timely reminders regarding materials appropriate for classroom use or professional growth. * Provides staff with customized online literature searches and interlibrary loans that assist them in attaining professional growth and goals. * Collaborates with teachers to teach information skills within the curriculum. * Collaborates with teachers to integrate information literacy standards across the curriculum. * Promotes enticing learning environment. * Helps students develop habits of independent research. * Collaborates with teachers to encourage students to become information literate, independent in their learning, and socially responsible in their use of information and technology. * Instructs on Web page evaluation, ethical use of Internet resources. * Instructs on word processing, database preparation, proper format of research papers. 2. Uses a variety of materials and activities to stimulate and maximize learning to help students achieve educational and personal goals. * Uses activities that relate directly to the curricular lesson. * Evaluates, acquires, provides, and promotes information resources to meet the learning needs of all students. * Uses materials and vocabulary appropriate to the target audience. * Actively involves students in the learning process. * Integrates technology appropriately into the lesson. * Participates in electronic networks and resource-sharing systems that expand the Media Center's capacity to access information globally. 3. Delivers instruction in a manner that facilitates and maximizes learning. * Uses varied activities during class period. * Presents directions and instruction clearly and concisely. * Models information skills' techniques and processes for all learners. * Stimulates pupil participation. * Promotes higher level thinking skills. * Students' needs are met for each assignment in the best possible manner. 4. Provides support services and materials for teachers. * Meets reasonable "rush" requests for assistance and materials. * Identifies materials appropriate for the teachers' objectives. * Collaborates with teachers to plan the use of Media Center materials in instruction. * Assists teachers in the use of technology. * Provides consultation to teaching teams, departmental chairs and grade level groups. * Contributes to overall curriculum planning in the school through participation on curriculum planning committees. * Serves on building and district technology committees, communicating with staff and administration on goals, projects, technology needs. * Serves on the building Web page committee, being responsible for the Media Center's Web site. * Participates actively in educational media organizations, and attends meetings of other educational and professional groups.
