A wonderful picture book to read to primary kids: The Wave, adapted from Lafcadio Hearn's Gleanings in Buddha-fields by Margaret Hodges. Illustrated by Blair Lent. Houghton Mifflin, 1964; a paperback was pub. by Harcourt, 1997. It's adapted from a Japanese folk tale about a boy and his grandfather who live on a hill above a seaside village. His grandfather saves the people of the village when he sees the sea suddenly retreating and remembers tales of tidal waves told to him as a child. To force the people to rush up to him, he sets his rice fields on fire and saves the whole village. It may be hard to buy, but most public libraries should have it.
