I'm forwarding this for those who may find it of interest. Melanie Aultman ------------------ From: "Lauren Brosnihan" <brosniha@english.ufl.edu> To: <fl-lib@list.dos.state.fl.us> Subject: Transforming Encounters II Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2005 13:22:22 -0500 We wish to cordially invite you to attend the second annual colloquium sponosored by the Center for Children's Literature and Culture at the University of Florida. Our conference this year is titled: "Transforming Encounters II: Children and Science, Imagination and Inquiry." It will be held on the University of Florida Campus on February 18th and 19th. The colloquium will explore a range of approaches, new and traditional, historical and contemporary, for bringing science literacy into children's lives. Like last year's colloquium ("Children's Libraries Unbound"), we will once again be examining some of the innovative ways of kindling curiosity among young people in the sciences -- a subject that has and will continue to play a vital role in the our cultural environment. The conference audience and participants will be a very eclectic, interdisciplinary one, including scientists, educators, scholars, researchers, librarians, and media specialists -- as well as poets, artists, and writers. This year's conference is sponsored by the University of Florida's Center for Children's Literature and Culture, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Department of English, and France Florida Research Institute. Other participants include the Florida Museum of Natural History, the University of Florida's College of Education, The Alachua County Library District, The Alachua County Schools, and The Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literatures. Please see our website for the impressive list of national and international participants and their innovative programs and contributions. A group of researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh will present their unique Explanatoids project that place science information in Pittsburgh's public spaces using electronic bulletin boards and other very accessible venues. Marie Vannouque-Digne, the Cultural Attachée in the French Embassy in Washington will speak about the innovative French science program for young people, La Main a la Pate, initiated by the Nobel Laureate in Physics, Georges Charpak. And Vicki Cobb, author of numerous books about science for young people (including the award-winning /I Touch the Wind/), will be presenting _her_ "hands-on" approach to science. Conference participants will also be able to tour the Butterfly Rainforest and the McGuire Center at the Florida Museum of Natural History. http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/butterflies/exhibits.htm These events are free and open to the public. Please check the website for more information and for the registration form. http://www.recess.ufl.edu/Transform2/index.shtml We are very excited about the colloquium and its featured speakers, and we sincerely hope that you will be able to join us at the University of Florida for what promises to be a stimulating, interdisciplinary program of presentations and discussions. Our thanks in advance for your help in spreading the word about the conference.
