I have to add my 2 cents to this thread. After going home and pulling up the Houston article at home, because of the school's filter. Thought maybe there was a "bad" picture included with the article, I finally surmised that the word "porn" was the culprit -- got to love them filters. Any way after reading the article and the recent censorship problems the Kansas City Metropolitan area is having with "The Giver" I decided to find out if the local library had a copy of this offensive book. The local library doesn't, but it is part of the Kansas City Public Library system, which has two copies, so before another mayor or superintendent decides that this book is going to cause the fall of the "Western World" I decided to request a copy. Of course now I am on the FBI and Homeland Security's watch list as a double subversive/terrorist -- Librarian and a reader of inappropriate materials!!!!! But we all know that my library records are all protected by the constitution. :-) I can hardly wait to see the expression on the local library clerk when I go to check out my requested book. One more thing -- I know we are not suppose to be political -- But the recent thread about contacting Mrs. Bush and asking for help -- what exactly has she or her husband done in the last four years to actually help library funding or literacy other than pay it lip service. It is bad enough when it is a school principal, but what message are we sending from Texas when Houston's Mayor becomes a censor? After this article the waiting list for the book will be even longer, even if it is in the closed stacks. People who would not have been interested in it before will now have to see it to see what all the fuss is about.
