In a K-8 collection, does anyone have a great way of steering the
youngest kids away from books intended for the oldest kids?  On the one
hand, I don't like setting up any kind of "forbidden fruit" situation;
on the other hand, in a K-8 setting, the fact is that what's appropriate
for an 8th grader isn't always appropriate for a 1st grader. I'm sure
that others in K-8 settings will understand this tension!  Is it best to
subdivide the collection?  Add YA stickers?  Educate the students to
make good choices and then leave it entirely up to them?  Veto students'
choices when they arrive at the circulation desk?

 

One example:  We have a book on chemical and biological warfare, geared
for YA.  128 pages, maybe 20 black and white pictures, including a dead
soldier, an injured or dead Kurdish child, and a victim's badly burned
arm.  The first and second grade boys discover this book because it's
shelved in the middle of a set of lower-level books about tanks,
submarines, and other military vehicles.  They're drawn to it because it
the cover features a glossy color picture of 3 soldiers carrying guns
and wearing gas masks.  They don't even open the book- they just see
that cover and want to check it out.  This happens almost every week.
What would you do?
