I have done the same thing with my 2nd graders. I also shared The Red Book
by Barbara Lehman. I couldn't get Coming on home soon by Woodson. I showed
them to 4 different classes. Three of them liked Knuffle Bunny the best, one
liked Kitten's First Full Moon. The Red Book was difficult for some to
understand, but they enjoyed that too.

Hi All-
I was able to get my hands on Kitten' First Full Moon as well as Knuffle
Bunny from our Scholastic Book Fair last week. I think Knuffle Bunny is a
nicer book but decided to put both books to the test with my first graders.
I have been explaining about the Caldecott medal using my 2004 Follett
poster and some winning books from our collection. Then I've been telling
the students that both books were award winners and reading both to the
classes. After reading and discussing the books we have a vote. So far 3
classes have all voted for Knuffle Bunny over Kitten's First Full Moon- one
class unanimously. The kids all seem to identify with Trixie's frustration
over not being able to communicate effectively using baby talk. They laughed
at Kitten's foibles but were not as engaged.

Last year I did something similar with Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus
and The Man Who Walked Between Two Towers. The kids enjoyed both books but
had different reactions to each.
