I had a 4th grade teacher question why we had this book in the media
center when one of her students pointed out that there was a "curse word" in the
text. When I asked her to read the entire passage to me she did. It was when a
soldier called out " Stop, damn you!" I explained to her that Jean Fritz was a
well known and respected author of historical fiction and that in the context
of the passage it was not written to create an effect to shock but to be
authentic to the time, place, and event she was describing. I also told her that
she needed to consider the total work, rather than just that one sentence in
judging whether or not she wanted her students to read this, and I offered to
find several reviews to share with her.
I work in a public, not a private school, and I was a bit surprised that
this would cause the reaction I got from her. Does anyone have any further
advice as to what I should have said to her concerning this? I looked up a review
and it said the audience was ages 9-12. All reviews were quite favorable.
Please reply to me at my e-mail address below. Thank you.
