Wow! Thanks to everyone for their quick responses. There were several good suggestions, which I've summarized below. One thing that I forgot to put in my Target is that we were looking for something with a female protagonist, but that would still appeal to boys. We've used Maniac Magee for the last few years, but the Dean of Students wanted something a little different. (Yes, I know that Spinelli's book Loser is about a boy!). I'll pass this list on to her.
