thanks to all who responded! Everyone states that the more props, the
better, and that books that befall terrible accidents during the year should
be kept to show for this purpose. Some had actually made a "book hospital"
display of these, with band-aids, gauze, etc. (how cute!)
below are responses:

Try

Or go to the archives and type in book care lesson

I do this lesson but I don't have my lesson plans with me. I usually read
Mr. Wiggle. It's about book care. Then I bring out my basket of props. I
try to have enough props or even pictures of props so that everyone can
participate. I take each item out explain how it relates to book care and
then put them all back in the basket. I let each child take one thing out
of the basket and tell how the item relates to book care. I do this with
kindergarten and first grade. The kids love it.
Some of the props I can think of are:
scotch tape - don't let a parent repair a book
stuffed animal - keep your pets away from books.
plastic hamburger (or any food) don't eat while reading.
bookmark - always use a book mark
crayon - don't draw in your book
pencil - don't write in your book
You get the idea.

Soap—wash hands before reading
Stuffed dog—don’t dog ear the pages, followed by
Bookmark to introduce use
Stuffed dog again later, to show how dogs can chew books (much better if an
actual “chewed” book can be shown
dollhouse bathtub-- don't get books wet
Dirty shoe—don’t stuff in the bottom of a backpack with dirty clothes or
shoes on top
Scissors, pens, markers – don’t cut or write in the books
Baby doll—don’t get the book near baby brother or sister
A juicy peanut butter sandwich in a Ziploc bag—don’t eat while reading the
books (fun to demonstrate!)

Role-play proper page turning, use of bookmarks, using the bookdrop

Love the idea about the basket of props. I'm not sure of the content of the
original idea, but how about an umbrella as a reminder to keep books out of
the rain?

For the part about which books to start with:

The Librarian from the Black Lagoon (second grade)
Book! Book! Book! (kindergarten)
Wild about Books (third grade)
The Library Dragon (fourth grade)
I.Q. Goes to the Library (kindergarten)
That's Good! That's Bad! (first grade)- this book is not about a library,
but we read it and then do an activity with "That's Good! That's Bad!"
about library books.
