Curmudgeon response:

My inclination would be to find something less obsessed with celebrities and "pop
culture" - there are so many other things that go on in the world!
The reference to the Space Shuttle was pretty much the only "important" thing
besides having the right car, the right clothes, the right songs, hair, & baseball
cards. I guess I see the value of including the context of everyday life, and
maybe it's just me, but this makes you think everybody spent their entire days
doing nothing but "look right" and figuring out what to buy next... the American
Way??

That's a GREAT song to use with "this generation" of students--the only problem
might be the "country music" angle, but the words are great! My husband and I have
had a lot of discussions about the memories that the song brings up. With all of
the "retro- '70's" stuff that is out there, this will connect the past to the
present and provoke some research into everything from Elvis Presley to rubic
cubes! (biographies to toy inventions)...what a fun project!

Thanks, Darlene, for reminding us of this one!

This is a link to a Mark Wills ( country) song called 19 Something. I think it
would be perfect for what you were looking for-- there is nothing that you have to
change or censor and it goes through pop culture from the 70's through the 90's
