Dear Listers:
I'm looking for titles of novels, or collections of fiction, or essays
that highlight people of mixed (black and white) parentage. I'm looking
for insights into the ways people have come to terms with their mixed
heritage; their struggles and triumphs. Both female and male characters
are fine. Material should be on an adult down to upper high school
level. Time frame should be 20th or 21st century, preferably mid-20th.

etc., but the primary focus is on adoptions. The child may not be
bi-racial, but the family is.

An excellent collection of that I have just finished reading is WHAT ARE
YOU? VOICES OF MIXED-RACE YOUNG PEOPLE, edited by Pearl Fuyo Gaskins
(Holt, 1999, 0-8050-5968-7). This collection includes poems and essays
written by mixed- and biracial young adults, from age 14-28, most
between 18-22. There is an extensive resource list in the back that
includes fiction, nonfiction, listserves, web sites, advocacy
associations, and more.
