For virtually all of the collaborating I have done, I have at some point
gone to the teachers and said "This is what I could do for you." Once they
know what kinds of things you can do for them, they will come and ask you to
collaborate. I also sometimes do presentations at staff meetings to
introduce a service that I can provide. I totally agree with what another
responder said . . . the welcoming atmosphere is more about your personal
relationship with the teachers than about how the library looks. I have also
obtained teacher involvement by getting them to collaborate with me. For
example, 2 years ago I ran a favorite books contest in which I solicited
teachers to do brief write-ups on their favorite author or book. I then
created a display each month depicting the book or author of the month.
Students were invited to guess which teacher had selected the book for the
month. Winners won a Barnes and Noble gift certificate. At the end of the
month, I took the teacher's picture with the book of the month and posted it
in the library. Teachers and students enjoyed that involvement, so the next
year I did favorite poems and poets.

Subject: [LM_NET] Setting the library atmosphere
Date: Mon, 6 Jun 2005 17:35:42 -0700

Hello Fellow Netters,

Are there any high school librarians that have had
good success with creating an inviting library
atmosphere to encourage teachers to seek library
services more?

I was reading the post from Mari Ferguson regarding
setting a receptive atmosphere in her library. An
atmosphere that is inviting to teachers and will make
them want to come in to look and ask how the library
can be of help to them with their students.

I am a new high school librarian and I am looking for
the same thing. The students that are sent to the
library seem to enjoy the space however the teachers
rarely come in to seek any collaboration.
