Library Media System Mission Statement
The goal of the Library Media System at VSDB is to develop "independent, ethical,
lifelong learners who achieve personal satisfaction and who contribute responsibly
and productively to .society as a whole." (Information Power: Building Partnerships
for Learning by AASL and AECT, ALA 1998) The library system promotes literacy
development and the acquisition of information literacy skills through its
collection of resources and instructional collaboration with teachers. The library
system also provides curricula enrichment and support for all VSDB students in
grades preK-12. To this end, VSDB has established and actively maintains three
full service libraries which comprise the VSDB Library System.
. Deaf Department Library which contains the collection of resources for
elementary, middle and high school students and staff
. Blind Department Library which houses the collection of print, large print,
Braille and audio resources for students and staff
. Yates Satellite Library for residential students which contains print and Braille
resources for student use after school hours.

Philosophy of the Library Media System
The primary objectives of the school's library system are to enrich and support the
educational program of the school, to meet the interest needs of those it serves,
and to encourage a love of literature. It is the function of the library to
provide a wide range of material presented in a variety of media formats on all
levels of difficulty with a diversity of appeal and the presentation of different
points of view that are accessible to the hearing impaired and visually impaired
population that we serve. VSDB supports the principles of intellectual freedom
inherent in the Constitution of the United States and expressed in the American
Association of School Librarians "School Library Bill of Rights" and in the
"Students Right to Read" statement of the National Council of Teachers of English
[see appendix].

Goals
The Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton support the following goals
of the Library Media System:
. To provide students with intellectual access to information by teaching them
strategies for locating, accessing, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information
in all formats and in all content areas of the curriculum
. To provide resources to support academic and lifelong learning through a
systematically organized collection of diverse learning materials representing a
wide range of disciplines, sources, points of view, difficulty levels, and formats
which accommodate various learning styles, interests, and special needs and are
accessible by the hearing impaired and visually impaired students we serve
. To provide resources and materials representative of religious, ethnic, and
cultural groups and their contribution to our American heritage
. To collaborate with teachers in providing literacy skills and information skills
to students as well as resources to meet instructional needs
. To demonstrate and encourage reading as a leisure activity and to foster a love
of literature
. To provide facilities that are adequate to house the collection in a well
organized, accessible manner and to provide an atmosphere that is conducive to
learning
. To provide access to resources and materials beyond VSDB's Library Media System
through a systematic set of procedures and agreements including, but not limited
to: electronic networks and databases, interlibrary loan, and cooperative
agreements with other agencies
. To provide to students and staff training and experience with the variety of
communications media and technology used for instructional, learning purposes
. To promote and encourage the integration of technology into instruction and the
curriculum
. To support the concepts of intellectual freedom and equal access which are the
foundation of our democratic society
