I did something with my series books that I read about on LM_Net in the
past. I use plastic flower boxes. I simply place all of the series in
one box. They come in different sizes making it easy to use them with
all different sets. I place the box on the shelf where the set would
normally be shelved. If there is not room on the shelf I place it on the
top or on the bottom shelf (which in my library is usually empty). I
label the box with large letters so the students can easily see which
set it is. This has made shelving easier, kept the shelves neater longer
and made it easier for the students. Many get hooked on a set and can
now find all of the books in one spot. I also started using these boxes
for some of the favorite authors such as Beverly Cleary and Roald Dahl.
I sometimes have to use more than one box, such as for the Boxcar
children. I have had a lot of interest in the boxes from visiting
librarians and teachers. Many find it a good idea and replicate it in
their room or library. There is one series I do not shelve that way and
that is Goosebumps. I have so many of those and most are paperback. I
keep those on a paperback spinner that is designated just for them. This
also helps with shelving, students locating books and neatness. I found
that when the most used series were on the regular shelf and were always
being looked through, removed and returned the shelf would be a mess.
With the boxes I do not have this problem. Also with the boxes the
students get to look for the book by looking at the cover as well as the
title. Many like that such as browsing in a bookstore.
