MLA handbook section 5.3 (6th ed.) says, "As the heading Works Cited indicates, this list contains all the works that you will cite in your text. ... Other names for such a listing are Bibliography... and Literature Cited. Usually, however, the broader title Works Cited is most appropriate, since research papers often drow not only on books and articles but also on ...nonprint sources." "...Works Consulted indicates that the list is not confined to works cited in the paper. The heading... Selected List of Works Consulted is appropriate for lists suggesting readings in the field." We could use the concept of 'Works Consulted' to have researchers hand in as part of a presearch piece; listing resources found that may or may not make it into the final list. It would show the range of sources checked (teacher could have specific requirements as to # of books, articles, non-subscription databases, goggled stuff) and could be part of an resource evaluation piece.
