I had a great response from a number of people. Some people reminded me to make
sure that batteries were in the cassette players when returned. One person also
informed me that if I could only find cassette players with radios that I could
superglue the tape/radio tab into the tape position. I also found that Recorded
Books has a $23 Sony Walkman w/o radio and a $7.99 other brand walkman (that is
very much on backorder at the moment).

I think I will check out my local Target and Wal-mart type stores and if I don’t
find something I think I can use I’ll purchase the Sony walkman from Recorded Books.

Thanks once again.

When I did this, I found $5 cassette players, with headphones at Wal-Mart.
No radio.

Glad you said "inexpensive" rather than "cheap." I'm not sure there IS
such a thing anymore. You might want to check where stuff is made, too.
Some stuff made in China is NOT made by the company (brand) on the
package. There was a story in Business Week recently about a Honda
motorcycle that was actually a Chinese knockoff.

They are more expensive, but Highsmith has quite a few recorders, some
of which might work for you. I'm looking at a Sony for $27.95 (p. 471
of catalog L61) that might work for you.

Any of the library supplies catalogs (Gaylord, Highsmith, Brodart, etc.)
would have what you are looking for.

Highsmith School Products catalog carries several models like the one you're
seeking. They cost less than $50 each and if you're buying several, there's a
quantity discount. If you don't have this catalog, check the Highsmith site
online: www.highsmith.com.

We were able to get very cheap cassette players and headphones at WalMart
for our reading program. They did not have a radio and were under $9 each.
Quality of the player is not as good as some of the more expensive players,
however we found that with use, the expensive ones didn't even hold up that
long. Before that we would superglue the radio/tape button into the tape
position so students would not be able to access the radio part. Hope this
helps... Just a heads up, the other problem we had was students stealing
batteries out of the back. We would put tape across the back, however they
undo it and take them. You may want to have a policy to check that
batteries are 'returned' along with the player.

Hi, Last year I purchased 7 individual cassette players with headphones/no
radio at our local Wal-Mart. I found them on the lower racks in the
electronics department. they were about 7 bucks.

I got mine at Wal-Mart and I think it was $7. I also got some at goodwill. They
are like recorders and don't have a radio.

I bought some players from Best Buy for about $25 each; they did not come with
headphones. Radio Shack had some on sale a little cheaper but the sale was over by
the time I got there. There were cheaper ones but battery operated. Another
librarian said to not get battery players because then who supplies the batteries?
Ours were purchased when we had an influx of students from Mongolia; the ESL
teacher and I cooked up the idea that the kids would take the tape player home for
the year and check out audio books. They checked out the picture book one. Several
parents said the children found this very helpful.

I don't know about cheap, but try places like Kunz (Baltimore, MD) or
other equipment distributors and maybe a regular cassette player will
turn up.

My teachers have found "radio-less" cassette players at T.J. Max for like $5.00
each. Also, I have seen them near checkouts in stores like K-Mart, Wal-Mart, etc.
I don't know if you have TJ Max stores in your area, but it's worth a try. If not,
you might could call a TJ Max store, like the one in my area, to see if they could
sell you some via phone order. I also did a search and happened over this personal
cassette player. It's SpongeBob!?!!?? But it's only $9.99. I have enclosed info
and link. I hope this is helpful to you. Cristal Amazon.com: All Products Search

I saw two last night at Target, made by Jensen ($4.99 and $9.99).
I think they were sans radio.
