The original query (target) was: "I have joke books in both 808.88 and 818. The more I read my Dewey books (both the abridged and full DDC21), the more confused I get. Does anyone have a "plain English" explanation and a definitive answer as to which DDC number to use?" Many replied that they used 818. There were some using 793.73 or 793.735 since comedy qualifies as part of recreation (793.735 shows as Riddles in DDC Abridged 13 and DDC21, no jokes mentioned). Also 808.8 indicates collections of literary texts from more than two literatures. So it would appear that 818 would be the better number. I've reclassified my joke books that were in 808.88 to 818 so now they are all together. And, I must confess, my riddle books are there too!!! It's working for our students.
